JOB TITLE:        DIRECTOR OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS

BASIC FUNCTION:

Responsible for the overall direction, operation and management of the voice and data systems.

 

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Has primary responsibility for the organizations' telecommunications service, including the management, installation, maintenance, quality of the switching system and associated voice and data circuits, devices and supplemental equipment. Telecommunications include the electronic transfer of information, whether voice, data, high resolution image transfer, facsimile, or interactive video. Also responsible for strategic and financial planning; technical usage; forecasting; engineering; operation and maintenance; billing; purchasing; communications security systems; telecommunications related software and hardware; and the overall management of the organization's telecommunications resources.

 

Interfaces with administrative and service management (Budget/Facilities) to coordinate telecommunications plans with organizations financial plans, also coordinates data communica­tions needs for computing in organization. Serve as liaison to outside companies and organizations relating to telecommunications.

 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Receives general direction from the Vice President of Administration. Receives specific direction from several standing committees on corporate wide telecommunications.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Provides direct supervision for all telecommunications staff, including telephone operators, field personnel, switch room technicians and engineers.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree and extensive technical knowledge [organizations with specific technical needs should be specific about the extensive technical knowledge required to be successful in the position], minimum three years experience in the field of telecommunications and three or more years of supervisory experience. Experience in private industry or a comparable institution is desirable. Proficiency with a PC and related telecommunications software preferred. Good oral and written communications required.
