JOB TITLE:        DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORK SERVICES

BASIC FUNCTION:

Responsible for management of the organization's voice, video, and data communications systems.

 

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties consist of operational management of and strategic planning for network resources, research and development of new network and telecommunications methods, serves as the organization representative to local, state and national forums, staff management (including twelve professional staff) and accountability for planning and allocation of an annual budget of over one million dollars.

 

Responsible for all in-house maintenance of standard computer, video and communication hardware. A primary feature of this position will be the direction of a major telecommunications upgrade project.

 

The Organization's data communications currently consists of a broadband, campus-wide network connecting over 1,000 terminals and micros to VAX, Pyramid, HP, and/or IBM computers; several departmental Ethernet and token ring LANs running Novell; and connections to several remote sites. Telecommunications include service through a third-party vendor and a limited switch.

 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Reports directly to the Vice President for the Organization's computing and information systems.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Provides direct supervision of Voice Systems, Data Systems and Network Services Managers (3).

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

B.S. (M.S. preferred) in Engineering or Computer Science. Strong personnel management, budget and project management skills required. Extensive experience in network design, planning and implementation. Broad knowledge of technical concepts, including: asynchronous communications, DECnet, TCP/IP, OSI protocols, IBM SNA, fiber optics, and electronic mail strategies. Telecommunications management experience. Knowledge of MS-DOS, SUN Network File System and, Mac interfaces to mainframes.
