BASIC FUNCTION:

Provides a combination of technical and managerial techniques and tools that provide the capability to monitor and control communications system performance.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises monitoring of network performance and reliability to assure minimum interruptions in network service. Recommends changes in network configurations to Manager, Data Center Operations/Network Communications and other professional staff to improve levels of service and reliability. Evaluates and recommends selection of performance monitoring software and hardware to assure effective monitoring and control of network performance.

 

Supervises the identification and analysis of network problems to maintain and improve levels of service and, assure timely recovery of service in event of outages. Selects, trains and develops subordinate personnel to provide continuity of effective network service. Writes procedures and standards for network use to assure optimum utilization of the network and high level of service to users.

 

Recommends purchase of new communications software and hardware and related upgrades. Performs Liaison function with communications vendors during trouble determination evaluation and resolution. Maintains up-to-date knowledge on current and new communications hardware and software systems. May perform specific research assignments.

 

Performs other duties and assignments as directed.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Receives general direction from the Manager, Data Center Operations/Network Communica­tions. Priorities are generally agreed upon in advance by corporate management.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Provides direct supervision of own technical staff and that of vendors during trouble shooting/identification and resolution as is necessary to resolve problem.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

College degree, preferably a B.S. or M.S. in related field with 6-8 years of experience in Data Processing Communications, including extensive systems engineering, communications software design, assembly programming, analyzing communications problems, equipment installation and testing, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Extensive contact with users in organizations requiring effective oral and written communications. Effective relationships with vendors of communications services are required to assure high level of services. Strong working knowledge in software and hardware installation for communications, common carrier facilities, teleprocessing design methodology and tools, and knowledge of data processing.

BASIC FUNCTION:

General responsibility is the supervision of the assigned technicians and the assurance of the proper operation of the organizations' telecommunications networks.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Under broad guidelines established by the director, the incumbent must be specifically knowledgeable in the operation and function of the organizations owned and privately operated PBX. In the absence of the assigned PBX technician, the incumbent performs software modifications of the PBX and must be capable of recognizing, diagnosing and correcting faults and failures in the functions and operations of the PBX. When the assigned PBX technician is on site, the incumbent is responsible for monitoring the work activities of this technician to insure that the terms of our maintenance agreement are being met and that ongoing preventive maintenance on the PBX is being performed according to manufacturers' recommendations.

 

2.      Establishes techniques and procedures for installation, maintenance and repair of end user subsystems; key, hybrid, consoles, multi-line and/or single line.

 

3.      Monitors activities of technicians to insure that proper procedures are being followed and that standards of workmanship and safety are being met.

 

4.      Oversees activities of contract technicians to ensure that terms of our maintenance contract are being fulfilled.

College degree, preferably a BS in related area or equivalent professional experience. Minimum of three years in the field of data communications, or combined equivalent education and work experience. Must have an excellent working knowledge of data communications software and hardware and thorough technical knowledge and understanding of all test instruments in the Data Communica­tions Group. Experience with problem solving in a large complex data communica­tions network. Ability to interface with users and staff and possess good oral and written communicative skills. Must be able to work in stressful situations and be willing to work flexible hours.
